Tell us about your business.
I own Periwinkle Flowers, a flower shop in mid town Toronto. It’s a sunny and happy space where my staff and I make happy whimsical flower designs for customers to take or to send. I also work with couples to add the floral element to their weddings, with an emphasis on colour and a relaxed, happy style.
How did you get started?
I fully intended to be a journalist, even going off to University at 18 years old with that intent. I hated it and flunked out. I ended up taking a year long floristry course at Humber College more to have something to do rather than an intent interest, but it turned out I loved it and was well suited to it. I got hired on by my co-op placement company, a high-end floral shop in Rosedale. I worked at a variety of flower shops before spending a couple of years freelancing for floral studios around Toronto. In 2001 I made the leap and opened my own shop.
What is one thing people may be surprised to find out about you?
I love to sew and knit so I make a lot of my own clothes.
What is your personal favourite thing about your business and why?
I love the little slices of story I get throughout my day. When customers are buying they tend to talk to me about why they are buying, who they are buying for and I get to glimpse little pieces of their life, which I just find fascinating. Everyone has such a unique path and I love that I get to witness these moments as I make pretty flowers for people to give to other people. It really is just the best job.
Who/what inspires you?
I love connecting with other flower designers and florists. There is so much room out there for everyone, and I am a true believer in community over competition. It’s always inspiring to meet someone who loves flowers as much as I do, and I enjoy being exposed to new ideas and styles all the time.
What can guests at ReBash expect to see from you at the event?
I’m delighted to be partnering with ReBash again this year to add pretty flower touches to the space at large. This year I will have a table space too, where I’ll have pretty posies of spring blooms, mason jar posies, teacups potted with cactus, succulent terrariums with mini dinosaurs and other happy things from the shop.
Sounds beautiful, Jess! We are thrilled to have Periwinkle on board again and we can't wait to share her work with all of you brides-to-be, grooms-to-be and event professionals!
