RB: Tell us about Courtyard Bow Ties and how it started.
CBT: Courtyard Bow Ties are handmade casual and formal bow ties made with awesome prints that you won't find at your average suit store. I want to show people how fun it can be to look a little dapper. I started Courtyard Bow Ties when I asked my boyfriend if I could sew something for him. He said he'd like a bow tie, and I was delighted to learn how to make one for him. It was a ton of fun testing out bow tie shapes and fabrics. So much fun that I wanted to do it more often! So I did.
RB: What is your favourite thing about what you do?
CBT: I absolutely love picking fabrics. I get to choose cute fabrics that I wouldn't necessarily sew garments with, but that look amazing on a bow tie. I can spend hours looking at fabrics online.
CBT: Every time I see someone wearing a bow tie, I feel the need to make more. I'm always inspired by which events people wear a bow tie to, what outfit they've worn it with, and which TV shows they pop up in.
RB: If you could only work with 3 colours for the rest of your life which would you choose?
CBT: This is a tough one. I'd have to go with blue, black, and white. I love cool colours, so blue is #1, no competition there. Black and white may sound boring, but with different textures and prints, they can always look totally new and refreshing. And of course in the business of bow ties, black and white are essential.
CBT: I’ll have a small number of bow ties available to purchase at the market as well as order forms for custom bow ties for your groom and/or wedding party. Just let me know what theme or colours are being used for your wedding, and I'll find some fabric options for you to choose from. I'm looking forward to meeting bow tie enthusiasts at ReBash!
Thanks Julia! We love your fun patterns and if we could go back in time we'd have your bow ties adorning all our groomsmen at our weddings!! Check out Julia at ReBash this Saturday April 18, 2015 at 918 Bathurst in Toronto.
