RB: Tell us about August In Bloom. What do you do?
AIB: August In Bloom is a boutique event styling company specializing in creating fresh and current designs for weddings and occasions – oh yeah, and we also style epic dessert tables! We offer full styling from your ceremony to reception and everything in between. Or partial styling if you just want one of our gorgeous sweet tables, we can do that too! We love being commissioned to do creative and unique instalments for events as well. I always tell my brides, if you can Pin it, chances are I can make it happen. Along with styling we also offer event planning and coordination services for those who want it all!
AIB: I graduated with a Human Biology degree, unfortunately with no passion to pursue my field of study as a career. I found an office job in order to pay the bills and started baking and cake decorating as a hobby. I loved it and decided that I was going to go back to school and become a cake decorator and start my own business designing wedding cakes! I took courses at Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts and also enrolled in the Pastry Arts Programme at George Brown College. Throughout all of this life was happening in the background and I had gotten married and had two kids back to back (or what I like to refer to as “baby-bunching”!) My dreams of designing high end wedding cakes was put on hold and I became a full-time stay at home mom. When it came time to celebrate my kids' birthdays I started baking again and styling sweet tables for their parties. I became fascinated with the world of highly stylized dessert tables on party blogs and Pinterest. I saw how elaborately they could be styled and how design elements could be translated to the desserts themselves. I realized there was a void in the market for the very “Pinterest-worthy” dessert tables here locally in Toronto. I started to notice the amazing feedback I was getting on the work I was doing and I decided to turn this new passion I had into a career – and so August In Bloom was born! This career path has continued to evolve and my focus has broadened now where I am using my passion for design to style and coordinate full events and not just sweet tables. Being able to design creative and unique weddings is something I absolutely love doing!
AIB: One of the biggest trends right now that has been all over the fashion runways and retail visual displays are paper flowers! This is also a huge trend right now in wedding decor and paper flower backdrops are being used for both ceremonies and receptions. In Toronto these instalments are not easy to find, however, there are options to purchase them through online retailers and Etsy shops. The difficult part about purchasing these are that most brides will not have a use for them after their wedding. Of course, you could turn your living room wall into one giant paper flower garden (which would be pretty awesome) but that's not realistic for most people. We thought a great solution to this would be to rent out paper flowers, just like most other wedding decor items. They are being produced in various sizes and they are all made by hand. We will also deliver them, set it up and tear it down at the end of the event. It's a perfect way to get that luxe look without having to spend hours curling paper petals or lots of money buying these flowers individually. We are really excited to be offering this service to local brides who are looking for this particularly unique type of wedding decor!
RB: Who or what inspires you?
AIB: My main inspiration is fashion. I am always looking at current runway shows, trends in colour palettes and pattern mixing. I love infusing these trends into wedding design while still keeping it beautiful and elegant. Aside from that, the couples themselves inspire me. From the first meeting, I look way more beyond just asking them “what is your colour scheme?”. I want to get a feel for their style and personality. What stores do they like? What genres of music do they enjoy? Which destination spot did they choose for their honeymoon? All of these elements are very indicative of the client's personal style and they help shape my vision in some way or another. I am always inspired to tell their “story”.
AIB: Wow, this is like Jeopardy hard. No joke, I have dessert almost after every meal! I am a total sugar addict and I never discriminate against desserts of any kind, so I really have to think long and hard on this one! It really would be a toss up between the two most popular desserts right now which are cupcakes and macarons. I love anything in little individual servings that doesn't require cutlery or dishes to eat. You can scarf them down quicker that way! Since I do have to pick one, I will pick the good ol' cupcake. This little gem was what sparked my baking passion and started it all!
