RB: Tell us about The Sweet Potato and the background on the shop!
TSP: The Sweet Potato was created by Digs Dorfman, who started off running the High Park Organic Market. His family goes way back in the grocery business in Ontario (he is a third-generation grocer, and years ago started his professional career in his grandfather's store stocking shelves), but when Digs started the High Park market, he never thought it would grow into a brick-and-mortar store. He ran the market for several years, just on weekends during the summer, and in so doing met lots of local farmers and members of the community.
It was actually a couple of customers who told him to open a store. They explained that they walked to the market every weekend, and loved the exercise and the access to great local produce, and it broke their hearts when the market shut down every autumn. If he opened a store, they pointed out, he could be open year-round, and probably wouldn't get rained on as much.
For almost a decade now, The Sweet Potato has been a member of the Junction community, growing and changing with the community around us. We are a fully stocked grocery store, featuring local & organic produce, grocery, meat, bakery, dairy, bulk, frozen foods, cleaning products, housewares &c. We have great relationships with a number of local farmers and producers, and work hard to feature local produce and brands. Many of our staff live nearby, and have great relationships with the customers. In fact, one of our favourite things about running a family-oriented store is watching the kids grow up!
TSP: We sell tonnes of avocadoes and bananas, naturally. We do great business on coconut milk, fruit juice, and most interestingly, carbolic soap!
RB: We are also partnered with Second Harvest (20% of ticket sales will be donated to the charity) can you tell us more about your involvement with them?
TSP: We are really glad to work with Second Harvest. They do great work, and when it happens that we have some produce that we can't sell (if it's conventional [ie not organic], or a mis-ship, or some other reason), we always give them a call and try to make sure that it gets put to a good use.
TSP: Visitors to The Sweet Potato can expect friendly and helpful staff, amazing produce at great prices, and a great selection of grocery, baked goods, and meat from a number of local and Canada-wide suppliers. We have our own kitchen that makes great soups, sandwiches, salads, dips, dressings, snacks &c daily, and we feature two hot & fresh soups every day (made fresh) that people go crazy for. Depending on the season, we'll have corn from southern Ontario, blueberries from northern Ontario, sustainable fish from Kolapore, grass-fed milk and butter, and always a great selection of healthy and super-yummy things. Also hand-made soaps, great shampoos and health-and-beauty aids, and lots of other great stuff, too!
Thanks so much Digs, Evan and the team at The Sweet Potato for being generous Goodie Goodie bag sponsors! Each bag contains a gift card to the shop so you can get your local shop-on! See you in line on April 18!
